How to Connect a PS5 Controller on a PC?

Gaming with a controller for various PC games, such as Rocket League, Cuphead, or Dark Souls, can provide more precise control over your gameplay. Here’s what you’ll need to connect a PS5 controller to your PC:

  • Bluetooth-enabled computer or Bluetooth dongle

  • DualSenseX or DS4Windows software (or alternately Steam’s built-in functionality)

  • PS5 controller

  • USB cable (USB-C to USB-A or USB-C)

Wired and Bluetooth Connections:

Gaming with a controller for various PC games, such as Rocket League, Cuphead, or Dark Souls, can provide more precise control over your gameplay. Here’s what you’ll need to connect a PS5 controller to your PC:

  • Wired Connection: To connect your PS5 controller using a wired connection, you will need a USB Type-C to USB-A or USB-C cable. Note that the PS5 console's included controller does not come with this cable.

  • Bluetooth Connection: For a wireless connection, ensure you have a USB Bluetooth adapter. Open the "Bluetooth & other devices" settings in Windows, then press and hold the PS and Create buttons on the DualSense controller to enter pairing mode. Once the light bar starts flashing, search for the controller in your PC's Bluetooth settings and connect.

Setting Up with Steam

Once your controller is connected, launch Steam and navigate to the settings to configure your controller. Steam will automatically map the buttons to mimic an Xbox controller layout. Be sure to check the "PlayStation Configuration Support" option to customize the controller layout to your preference.

Using the Controller with Non-Steam Games

To use your PS5 controller with non-Steam games, you can add these programs to your Steam library using the "Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library" feature. This allows you to utilize Steam's controller configuration settings. Additionally, third-party tools like DS4Windows or DualSenseX   can enhance the functionality of the DualSense controller in non-Steam games.

How to Use Your PC Monitor with PS5?

If you have a game that isn’t available on PC, there’s no need to disconnect anything. Most contemporary monitors offer multiple HDMI ports, allowing simultaneous connection of both a PC and PS5. Monitors can be particularly beneficial for gamers who prefer FPS or competitive gameplay due to their fast response times compared to TVs.

To use your monitor with a PS5, you'll typically need:

  • PS5 console

  • HDMI cable

  • Available HDMI port on your monitor

  • External speakers or headphones (if your monitor doesn't have built-in speakers)

In terms of audio, the PlayStation 5 does not support direct Bluetooth audio connections. Therefore, alternative methods for audio connectivity are available, which will depend on the specific device in use.

Method 1: Wired Connection (3.5mm Jack on the DualSense controller)

  1. Plug your headphones into the 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom of the PS5 DualSense controller.

  2. Adjust audio settings: Go to Settings > Sound > Output Device and select "Headset connected to a controller."

Method 2: Wired Connection (3.5mm Jack on the monitor)

  1. Plug your headphones into the 3.5mm audio jack on the monitor.

  2. Adjust audio settings: Go to Settings > Sound > Output Device and select "HDMI Device (TV)"

Method 3: Wired Connection (Soundbar through eARC on the monitor)

  1. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable to connect your PS5 to the non-eARC port on the monitor

  2. Use another HDMI 2.1 cable to connect the HDMI eARC port (check manual for which port supports eARC) to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC (TV ARC) input.

  3. Enable eARC on the monitor & soundbar

  4. Go to PS5: Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Set Output Device: HDMI Device (AV Amplifier)

Method 4: Wireless Connection (USB Dongle)

  1. Plug the wireless headphone’s USB dongle into the PS5’s USB port

  2. PS5 will auto-detect the headset

Summary

Optimizing your space and finances with a dual-use setup saves time and streamlines your equipment. Utilizing a single monitor for both PS5 and PC gaming allows you to switch seamlessly between devices, supporting a richer and more flexible gaming experience.
