As holiday celebrations continue to evolve, more people are turning to house projection mapping to transform their homes into projection mapping shows for seasonal celebrations and special occasions. In suburban residential environments, house mapping often involves limited projection distances (typically the front yard depth). When a projector is placed close to the house facade, the projection hits the house surface at a steeper upward angle, which increases the size of shadows cast by porch overhangs or garage eaves. To reduce these shadows, two physical adjustment steps are most commonly used in the setup process:

Most home house mapping setups require the projector to be elevated above the ground to reduce shadows caused by porch overhangs and roofline structures. Raising the projector position allows the projected light to better clear architectural obstructions and cover more of the house surface. Weatherproof projector enclosures are commonly installed on ground anchors, small tables, crates, or poles to achieve the required height.

Once the projector is elevated, the projector is commonly tilted downward so the image can cover the lower parts of the house, while the elevated projector position helps reduce roofline shadows.

However, this physical tilting causes image distortion, excessive tilt down can lead to trapezoidal distortion, requiring digital keystone correction that may reduce effective resolution and perceived brightness. 

Since tilting projectors down can reduce resolution and brightness, it is recommended to choose a projector with a lower offset ratio.
