House Projection Mapping Tutorial: Two Approaches for Beginners
  • 2026-08-19

More and more homeowners are turning their homes into stunning house projection mapping shows for Halloween and Christmas. House mapping is a projection technique where animated visuals are mapped precisely onto the shape of your home’s façade. But if you’re new to projection mapping, figuring out where to start, from choosing the right equipment and tools to creating and mapping your visuals, can feel overwhelming. This guide is for homeowners who are new to house mapping and want to make their holiday decorations more vivid.

To reduce mistakes and make setup easier, there are two approaches you can take:

  • Approach 1. DIY with off-the-shelf software and AI tools
  • Approach 2. Use an integrated, all-in-one tool

Plan Your House Projection Area

Before choosing either approach, start by planning and deciding which walls or surfaces you want to project onto. For both approaches, there are two key factors to consider first:

1. Confirm the projector's placement angle and projection distance

Note: Minimize keystone correction: Typically, if the projector isn't positioned straight toward the house, the image may appear trapezoidal. Therefore, place the projector as straight and centered toward the house if possible. If it's off-center, you can use keystone correction to square up the image as long as the projector is back far enough to cover the house.

2. Align the projection with the house: Project a white screen or test pattern and make sure the entire house is lit up by the projector. It’s best to have the projector a little further back than needed to accommodate adjustments like keystone correction.

Note: Glass can reflect light and let light through, making those sections look darker. If you want the entire house to look consistent, cover windows with a layer of white, opaque projection fabric or close the curtains if available.

Approach 1: Combine Existing Software and AI Tools

This approach enables you to create your house mapping show using a mix of existing software and AI tools, from drawing your house outline to generating and animating visuals.

Step 1. Draw the House Projection Outline

Download an outline-drawing software such as Digital Pressworks and follow the tutorial to trace the outline of your house's facade (the outer line drawing of the house). Once you’re done, save the outline as a PNG file. You'll use this file with AI tools in the next step.

Step 2. Turn Your House Outline into an Image

At this stage, follow these steps to turn your house outline into an image:

1. Add the house outline PNG file: Use the house outline PNG file from the step 1
2. Attach the ChatGPT skill: download the ChatGPT skill, house-mapping-outline-to-image-chatgpt.zip, and add it to ChatGPT. The skill lets AI take the outline you just drew in the previous step and use it to generate an image that aligns your house’s shape.
3. Describe your preferred style or theme: Use a prompt describing your preferred style or theme (for example, "haunted house Halloween"), and generate a customized image that fits the shape of your house.

Once you have the image, project it onto the actual house facade and visually check whether it's aligned with the house and matches the style you wanted.

Tip: An easy way to do this is to paste the image into PowerPoint (or Google Slides), stretch it to fill the entire slide, switch to full-screen presentation mode, and then project that slide onto your house to check alignment. If you need adjustments, discuss this with the AI software and ask it to revise the image. Once you're satisfied, download the image file and move on to the next step.

Step 3. Turn the House Image to Animation

Once you're satisfied with the image, use an AI video-generation tool to turn the image into an animation. Tools like DeeVid or Kling, which let the AI generate motion within a constrained area. When prompting, add the following instruction to help minimize the unwanted changes:

"Animate this image. Camera locked, no movement. No slow push-in. Keep all black areas pure black — do not add any content to black regions."

Step 4. Play the Animation on the House Façade

Save and load the finished animation onto your player (a media player or custom playback software) and start playing it.

You can also repeat the steps above to generate multiple animation scenes or themes and stitch them into one longer video. This can create a more dynamic and visually engaging house projection show.

Approach 2: Use an All-in-One (Integrated) Tool

Another way to do house mapping is with a toolkit called illumibot. It's an AI-powered device with playback that helps you project mapping content onto your house and automatically generates animation content with AI, saving you the time of manually creating and sourcing content yourself, as you would with the more hands-on DIY approach above.

You can Pick the Kit That Fits Your Setup

illumibot offers two kit options. The Combo Kit includes a projector, the illumibot box, and a weatherproof enclosure. If you already have a projector and enclosure, you can purchase the Personal Projection Kit separately.

Step 1. Capture Your House with Your Phone

Use your phone with illumibot.ai app and making sure the camera is close to the projector lens for more accurate mapping.

Step 2. Mask Your House

Use the photo you just captured to mask your house in the app. Make sure the mask covers every space you want to include in the projection mapping.

Step 3. Align the House Projection

Use the corner pin to align the projected image with your house facade. Use two fingers to fine-tune the image and make sure it fits the house as closely as possible.

Step 4. Generate and Play Your AI Animation

Tell the AI what you want to show, such as haunted house Halloween or Christmas scene, and generate the animation for you. Once the content is ready, start playback to project the animation onto your house.

You can also follow the setup tutorial guide or illumibot's setup instructions. From there, you can generate animation content simply by entering a prompt into the AI tool. This lets you skip manual steps in the DIY approach above, such as finding outline-drawing software and testing different AI models yourself, which can save you time and effort.

If you'd rather not source your own software and test different AI models, and prefer an out-of-the-box solution, illumibot is likely the better fit for you.

Final Thoughts: Which Approach Is Right for You?

Both approaches can help you create a house projection mapping show. If you want to choose your own tools and content, Approach 1 lets you build your show step by step. If you prefer a simpler setup with less time spent choosing software and creating content, Approach 2 offers a more streamlined, all-in-one solution.
