How to Connect a PS5 Controller on a PC?

Gaming with a controller for various PC games, such as Rocket League, Cuphead, or Dark Souls, can provide more precise control over your gameplay. Here’s what you’ll need to connect a PS5 controller to your PC:

  • Bluetooth-enabled computer or Bluetooth dongle

  • You can use DS4Windows (actively maintained) or DualSenseX (designed specifically for DualSense features like adaptive triggers and haptics).
Note: DS4Windows emulates an Xbox controller, while DualSenseX lets you enable some native DualSense features on supported games.

  • PS5 controller

  • USB cable (USB-C to USB-A or USB-C)

Wired and Bluetooth Connections:

Gaming with a controller for various PC games, such as Rocket League, Cuphead, or Dark Souls, can provide more precise control over your gameplay. Here’s what you’ll need to connect a PS5 controller to your PC:

  • Wired Connection: To connect your PS5 controller using a wired connection, you will need a USB Type-C to USB-A or USB-C cable. Note that the PS5 console's included controller does not come with this cable.

  • Bluetooth Connection: For a wireless connection, ensure your PC has built-in Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth adapter. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11 (or Bluetooth & other devices in Windows 10). Hold the PS and Create buttons on the controller until the light bar starts flashing rapidly. The controller should appear as "Wireless Controller"—click to pair.

Setting Up with Steam

Once your controller is connected, launch Steam and navigate to the settings to configure your controller. Steam will automatically map the buttons to mimic an Xbox controller layout. Be sure to check the "PlayStation Configuration Support" option to customize the controller layout to your preference.

Using the Controller with Non-Steam Games

Optional Additions

  • Add them to Steam using Add a Non-Steam Game to access Steam’s controller support.
  • Or use DS4Windows to emulate an Xbox 360 controller.
  • Or use DualSenseX to access native PS5 controller features (some games natively support DualSense now, including adaptive triggers).

  • Windows 11 Native Support: Windows 11 now offers slightly better plug-and-play support for DualSense (like battery display and smoother Bluetooth pairing).
  • Games with Native DualSense Support on PC: A growing number of games (e.g., Death Stranding, Spider-Man Remastered) now support adaptive triggers and haptics directly.

How to Use Your PC Monitor with PS5?

If you have a game that isn’t available on PC, there’s no need to disconnect anything. Most contemporary monitors offer multiple HDMI ports, allowing simultaneous connection of both a PC and PS5. Monitors can be particularly beneficial for gamers who prefer FPS or competitive gameplay due to their fast response times compared to TVs.

To use your monitor with a PS5, you'll typically need:

  • PS5 console

  • HDMI cable

  • Available HDMI port on your monitor

  • External speakers or headphones (if your monitor doesn't have built-in speakers)

In terms of audio, the PlayStation 5 does not support direct Bluetooth audio connections. Therefore, alternative methods for audio connectivity are available, which will depend on the specific device in use.

Method 1: Wired Connection (3.5mm Jack on the DualSense controller)

  1. Plug your headphones into the 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom of the PS5 DualSense controller.

  2. This only works if your monitor supports audio output from HDMI to its 3.5mm jack. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output, and ensure "HDMI Device (TV)" is selected. Then plug headphones into the monitor’s audio-out jack.

Method 2: Wired Connection (3.5mm Jack on the monitor)

  1. Plug your headphones into the 3.5mm audio jack on the monitor.

  2. Adjust audio settings: Go to Settings > Sound > Output Device and select "HDMI Device (TV)"

Method 3: Wired Connection (Soundbar through eARC on the monitor)

  1. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable to connect your PS5 to the non-eARC port on the monitor

  2. Use another HDMI 2.1 cable to connect the HDMI eARC port (check manual for which port supports eARC) to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC (TV ARC) input.

  3. Enable eARC on the monitor & soundbar

  4. Go to PS5: Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Set Output Device: HDMI Device (AV Amplifier)

Method 4: Wireless Connection (USB Dongle)

  1. Plug the wireless headphone’s USB dongle into the PS5’s USB port

  2. PS5 will auto-detect the headset

Method 5: Audio via HDMI Audio Extractor

Use an HDMI audio extractor between the PS5 and your monitor. It splits the HDMI signal and provides a 3.5mm or optical audio output, which can be used with external speakers or headphones.

Summary

Optimizing your space and finances with a dual-use setup saves time and streamlines your equipment. Utilizing a single monitor for both PS5 and PC gaming allows you to switch seamlessly between devices, supporting a richer and more flexible gaming experience.
