Video Editor and Content Creator / China
Different types of videos have different client needs and target audiences. Take travel videos as an example, there are various editing approaches. Some commercial travel videos need to integrate product features like an advertisement while showcasing local culture and landscapes. Others take a pure documentary-style approach, similar to vlogs or traditional documentaries. The editing approach depends on both client requirements and audience preferences. In terms of pacing, I constantly step outside the role of an editor and assess the video from the client’s or audience’s perspective. Using travel videos as an example again, scenic shots are often edited with a slow, emotional rhythm. However, modern audiences may not have the patience for slow-paced videos, making even the most stunning visuals feel dull. That’s why I adjust pacing by incorporating dynamic contrasts, "slow within fast," "fast within slow," and a mix of motion and stillness. Additionally, sound design plays a crucial role in maintaining audience engagement by enhancing the overall editing rhythm.
I choose music based on multiple factors, including video type, client product style, and artistic innovation. When selecting sound effects, I consider whether they can adjust the editing rhythm, enhance audience immersion, and amplify the emotional impact of the video
Music itself is highly expressive, but when the right music is paired with the right visuals, it can maximize audience engagement and immersion. However, some video editors rely too heavily on music, to the point where they struggle to edit without it. They also tend to overlook the importance of sound design. In many cases, well-executed sound effects can be even more emotionally powerful than music!
I love exchanging insights with fellow editors! Every editor encounters different clients, challenges, and brands, leading to diverse editing styles and approaches. Engaging with others helps broaden my perspective, expand my professional network, and accumulate valuable experience in solving various editing challenges. Discussing techniques with peers is one of the best ways to grow as an editor!
I’ve faced this dilemma as well! When it comes to frequency versus quality, I always prioritize quality. This means I may delay or pause updates, but I will never compromise on content quality. I believe that the content we publish reflects our skills and professionalism. A content creator’s personal brand is at stake. If we sacrifice quality just to maintain frequency, we risk diminishing our value and blending into the sea of low-quality content. This, in turn, weakens our influence in the industry. One effective way to solve the "high-frequency updates vs. high-quality content" challenge is to build an efficient and skilled team while leveraging professional tools. For instance, using BenQ’s video editing monitor can significantly enhance workflow efficiency, making it easier to maintain both consistency and quality.
