A CAUTIONARY TALE - WHY PHOTOGRAPHERS NEED A DEDICATED MONITOR!

My professional journey in photography can be categorised into two distinct periods: the period before integrating BenQ monitors into my workflow, and the period after.

Throughout my 13-year career as a full-time professional photographer, I consistently relied on high-end, all-in-one desktop PCs for image editing purposes. While these computers proved adequate for internet usage, Microsoft program utilisation, and music playback, I failed to realize the extent to which they underperformed in the realm of image processing.

In late 2017, my perspective shifted dramatically when I transitioned to a new computer and began encountering pronounced inconsistencies in colour rendition during the printing process. The images I observed on screen failed to materialise as intended in my prints, filled with undesired colour casts and over-saturation. Given that I utilised a professional photo laboratory for printing, it became evident that the issue lay within my own setup—a predicament that proved both financially and emotionally taxing. Consequently, I had no choice but to reproduce numerous images and to conduct blind editing, resulting in a significant difference to my envisioned aesthetic. I became frustrated and needed a solution.

Ironically, this experience eventually became a blessing in disguise. Seeking guidance, I consulted a trusted photographer friends who, upon recommendation, introduced me to the world of BenQ monitors. As soon as I powered up my first BenQ monitor, the disparity in image quality was immediately apparent—I was finally able to perceive my images in their intended glory, as I had envisioned them at the moment of capture. It was as though my images came to life, bursting from the screen. This newfound revelation made the images displayed on my standard computer screen feeble and dull in comparison. The enhancement in colour accuracy and tonal fidelity alone propelled my work and elevated my images to a whole new level.

INTRODUCING THE BENQ SW272U

Fast forward to 2023, when I began using the most advanced BenQ monitor for photographers yet new BenQ SW272U, 27 inch, 4K AdobeRGB, 90W USB-C Photographer Monitor. It was created specifically for photographers and is jam packed with features to assist photographers of all levels with their editing – and what an absolute dream it is. I loved my BenQ 271C and it served me well during the time I used it but my anticipation for the SW272U was strong. I was keen to find out how BenQ could exceed the design and performance of the SW271C. As soon as I took the SW272U out of the box, I knew it was an exceptional screen – and this is BEFORE I even turned it on.

Don’t think you can get emotional over a computer monitor? Think again. I did and I have no shame in admitting it. The BenQ SW272U was on a whole other design level. It doesn’t just offer high performance, it is the most stylish, sleek and classy looking BenQ monitor yet. It’s a work of art!

A PHOTOGRAPHERS MONITOR THROUGH AND THROUGH

The significance of investing in top-notch photography equipment cannot be overstated when it comes to realising the artistic vision we hold in our minds. Looking back, I now realize the oversight I made in focusing solely on high-end cameras and fast lenses, while neglecting a crucial component that should have been an integral part of my gear arsenal—a meticulously calibrated monitor tailored specifically for photography, delivering exceptional colour accuracy straight out of the box.

A generic monitor, such as the one found on a standard PC, falls short in meeting the demands of professional photography by inadequately reproducing colours, resulting in muted tones and diminished details that obscure the true essence of my images. Thankfully, BenQ has painstakingly listened to user feedback over the years, leveraging that valuable input in the creation of an exceptional monitor catering to our craft.

Through six years of dedicated development, BenQ has even devised its proprietary in-house colour calibration system, the Palate Master Ultimate (PMU), boasting lightning-fast calibration processes (clocking in at under 5 minutes) alongside enhanced reliability. This unwavering commitment to providing photographers with the most exceptional products, tailored to their unique needs, sets BenQ apart.

The BenQ SW272U presents an unparalleled colour range, imbuing each display with an unprecedented vibrancy never before witnessed. With its generous 27-inch screen size, this monitor ensures optimal visibility of the minutest details within my images, offering a faithful representation of colour and contrast that truly reflects the essence of the captured scene, culminating in flawless printing accuracy.

However, the importance of precise colour calibration extends beyond the realm of printing and is equally necessary for on-screen image viewing, image processing using editing software, and online image presentations. Without the utilisation of a specialist monitor, one runs the risk of failing to see the full spectrum of details present within each image. Personally, I want to view every captured element within my compositions, ensuring that the true colours of my animal subjects remain faithfully depicted, with each hair follicle and minute detail distinctly visible.

Specialized equipment, such as the BenQ SW272U, proves indispensable to achieve unparalleled results in my craft.
