"Sound Mode" is disabled when I connect the mini jack cable. Is it designed like this or it's defective?

Yes, "Sound Mode" is disabled when you connect the mini jack cable. Sound mode is designed to control EQ (Equalizer) of projector. If you connect the mini jack cable for external speaker, sound mode is disabled. The concept is to let you adjust EQ with your external speaker.
