What Is Projection Mapping?

Projection mapping is a technique that uses projectors to cast images onto irregular surfaces—walls, sculptures, buildings—rather than traditional flat screens. The magic lies in aligning the projected visuals with the contours of the physical object, creating the illusion that the object itself is animated.  At home, this can mean turning your garage door into a portal to another world, animating your windows with dancing flames, or syncing visuals to sound effects or music for your Halloween party.  Besides your house, you will need the following:

Short Throw Projector

While an amusement park has enough space to mount a projector nearly anywhere, most projectors are placed in the homeowner’s front yard.  A short throw projector enables you to top place the projector in your yard or driveway while generating a large enough image to reach the edges of your house.  The latest models have been developed specifically for home projection mapping have more advanced features than traditional short throw projectors used in classrooms.  Here’s what to look for in a home mapping projector:

Throw Ratio

The smaller the throw ratio number, the closer you can set the projector to your home and keep it in your own front yard.  A throw ratio under 1.0 is most common, with the 0.5 throw ratio most commonly used in smaller yards.

Solid State Lighting (Laser / LED)

While you can still buy used short throw projectors with bulbs, the best models use either laser or LED light sources.  While they are more expensive than a bulb projector, they are less finicky and nothing is worse than having the whole show go black because the bulb overheated.  Now that mercury bulbs are being phased out due to regulations, they may be very expensive to replace.

Resolution

Most professional amusement parks use 4K UHD projectors to create the immersive reality they need to support their ticket price.  But in 2025, there are now short throw projectors that can map in 4K UHD where its virtually impossible to see any pixels – even when you’re up close (there’s over 8 million pixels).   You can also use 1080p which has 2 million pixels, and delivers good quality videos.  The lowest practical resolution is WXGA, which can do widescreen, but only has 1 million pixels, so in this case you’ll most likely be able to see pixels on your house.

Dustproof Sealed Engine

Even though the projector will be in a box, the amount of dust and other materials from the outside can put a traditional projector with a filter at risk of overheating.  Look for a projector that is sealed – and certified with an IP5X rating or higher, as these eliminate the need to constantly checking and having to clean or replace messy filters.

Mini-PC

A mini PC is a compact, energy-efficient computer offering essential performance for everyday tasks, media streaming, and light gaming, ideal for space-saving setups.  These run the software and store the various content you want to project on the house.  Typically, they are placed by the projector in the waterproof box. Alternatively, you can use a media player like a Raspberry Pi or even a smartphone for simpler setups.  You’ll want to make sure that they are matched to your software program so they have enough power to run your videos and animations smoothly.

Projection Mapping Software

These software programs enable you to map the edges of your house, and trace key areas such as your garage door, windows, and other elements like gutters so that you can overlay the image on these specific features.  A good software mapping program can create a Halloween scene that will turn your garage door into a dark prison for monsters, while having ghosts pop in and out of your windows and other areas. There are a number of software platforms that are available, and there are more features and options than ever.  These programs range from professional systems such as Vioso to free trial period platforms like Mad Mapper.  Some systems use cloud technology like Luxedo, where you use their online tools to create your house map, while others such as illumibot leverage AI tools and content to use your phone to create your projection map.  Bottom line is that there are many options that are affordable and easy to use.

Waterproof Box

Projection mapping a house requires a waterproof box to ensure that the projector doesn’t get wet when it rains (or your yard sprinklers go off).  These are designed with fans and other protections for the projector to keep it from overheating on a warm night.  Because short throw projectors have offset (where the image is created above the projector), most setups will use a pole or other mechanism to elevate the projector so that it can be tilted down a bit and enable the image to reach the bottom of the house.  Companies like Screen Solutions and others offer weatherproof boxes for projectors.
