How to use projection mapping for Haunted Houses in 2025

.

Everything you need to know about using projectors in haunted houses.

Giant robot monsters that speak with real voices, been there.  Spooky LED light shows, done that. But for many haunted houses, the breakthrough product is…projectors. Projectors?

The 2025 TransWorld Christmas and Halloween Show is the anchor show for people and companies that set up holiday scenes, haunted houses, spooky hayrides. At the main stage at the event projection mapping expert Iron, Wood, and Glitter used four BenQ laser projectors meshed together for a compelling animated show that highlighted the potential for projection mapping in small venues. Today, some of the best haunted houses are now using advanced AI software, color-accurate projectors to map their buildings, windows, and even toilet bowls to attract new paying customers.

Projection Mapping Halloween Haunted House Guide in 2025

Where to use projectors in a haunted house

The easiest way to incorporate projectors is with a short throw projector on a flat surface in your haunted house. Most haunted houses have walls, ceilings or floors that can be transformed into visual illusions, such as a projecting a mine shaft opening on your floor that’s home to some evil ghoul.  Projectors can be used on any surface, and in a dark environment, you don’t need an expensive model to pull off some major oversize effects at minimal cost.

The newest trend in haunted houses is the ability to use projection mapping technology to overlay projected images onto 3D objects with special software that can transform ordinary objects into something completely terrifying. For example, at the Dent Schoolhouse haunted house in Cincinnati, Ohio they use a short throw BenQ projector to generate a mass cockroaches crawling out of a toilet bowl towards their terrified customers.  For haunted house owners, they can reuse the projector mapping technology for Thanksgiving and Christmas shows using the same buildings with different scenes to improve their overall return on investment and increase ticket sales.

What types of projectors are used in a Haunted House?

For older LCD projectors with filters, the dust and smoke effects from a typical haunted house will void the warranty and wreck the insides of most models. However, in 2025, BenQ has a complete line of short thow sealed laser projectors that are tested under the IP5X industry standard and perfect for projection mapping.  Here are the key things to look for in a haunted house projector.

Short Throw Lens

This is the first thing you should look for so you can create a big image without having the projector too far away, where people walking through will create shadows. The lower the throw ratio number, the closer you can put the projector to the surface you want to use. You can find a short throw projector by looking at the “throw ratio” specification which should be less than 1.0 on the data sheet. For example, the BenQ LH830ST has a throw ratio of 0.5, which can create a 12-foot-wide image from less than six feet away. We’ll list some short throw projector models below at the end of the article.

Color Accuracy

You need a color accurate projector to ensure that your ghost, goblin, or headless horseman image looks realistic enough to fool your guests (at least for a few seconds). Many projectors are only designed for PowerPoint slides and can’t generate natural organic colors you might find on a skeleton or werewolf.  So, if you want your talking pumpkin to look like the real thing, look for projectors with Rec. 709 color specifications, which ensure they can reproduce with the same accuracy as a typical television.

Resolution

Higher resolution projectors with over 2 million pixels are now easily affordable for most haunted houses.  You need enough pixels so that the image looks uniform, and you don’t see any “screen door effect” that is common on lower resolution projectors, especially older ones using LCD technology.  The best resolution for the most realistic images is 4K UHD resolution with 8.3 million pixels. There are a few projectors with this resolution that come with short throw lens that are used for simulation and mapping. Some brands sell projectors that look like 4K – even in the description – but all it means is they can accept a higher resolution signal. Look at the specification sheet for 8.3 million pixels.

Most of the other specifications such as brightness and laser technology are well known, and we’ll compare these down in the table below.

Projection Mapping Software

If you want to project ghosts inside your windows while changing the color and textures of your walls, you need to use a 3D projection mapping software program. This software allows you to map specific images or videos to the elements of your haunted house, such as roofs, pillars, and windows. At the 2025 Transworld Halloween Show, illumibot showed an AI software package that can use your phone’s camera to photograph the area you want to project and create AI generated artwork. Luxedo was also at the show, where they have an online tool to enable you to map your haunted house for images and video. There are a number of other software programs available for download online.

Projector Enclosures

The last key component is a box to keep the projector safe from rain and secure from theft. Because projectors generate a lot of heat, the boxes need proper ventilation, and many have temperature sensors with integrated fans to ensure the projector doesn’t overheat even on a warm and humid night. The BenQ LH830ST has an oversize security bar that can be used to lock in the projector directly or with an enclosure security system. Companies like Screen Solutions International and Luxedo offer models that can be purchased online.
