Golf has been a passion of mine for over 10 years but really kicked into high gear during the pandemic. Like many other community members out there - COVID lead me to create my personal golf space where I could practice day or night regardless of what was happening in the world. My setup is located in my basement, paired with a W82’’xH86’’ that’s close to a 1:1 screen, along with the Skytrak launch monitor. Recently, I had a chance to upgrade from a lamp projector to the BenQ LH820ST laser projector and wow has it taken my sim room to the next level.
Due to having a window with my current layout. I needed to have a powerful projector that allowed for clear images regardless of whether it was day or night. The BenQ LH820ST really came through and performance is unmatched. The special Golf Mode makes the green grass, trees, sand, and even the blue sky colors vivid so they really pop. The sound system helps greatly, with the little chirps of the birds in the GSPro background.
The projector has a built-in 2D keystone and corner fit, helping the projector shift away and adjust. Being able to make all the decorating and design dreams come true through DIY is fun! That’s the biggest satisfaction for DIY golfers and I would argue the reason why many of us gravitate towards building a sim vs paying someone to do it. In addition to that, BenQ has a 3D Golf Sim Planner that helps golfers figure out where to put the projector, launch monitor, and other setup elements. The tool simplifies the installation process and helps golfers create their mancave and enjoy an immersive golfing experience.

In the process of building a sim room and experiencing the gameplay, led me to develop the Birdie Blades control box. Picture a round of golf on your favorite simulator, the swing of your club, the thrill of your shots. Now, imagine having that rhythm interrupt to fiddle with settings. A fully customizable box, letting you map buttons to your preferences based on the software you run. You can effortlessly toggle between club selections, adjust your aim, request a mulligan, and even initiate a captivating flyby video. I saw the industry's need for a smoother experience and crafted a solution. It's available for GSPro, TGC 2019, and E6 golfing software with wireless and wired options.
All in all, I am very happy with BenQ and its LH820ST model. It is a powerful projector that has lots of features built-in, 20,000 light source lifespan, and true-to-life color so you get a lot for your money in this price range!
