If you would like to play a game that is not available on PC, you do not need to be unplugging cables.  Many modern monitors multiple HDMI ports so that you can have a PC and PS4 connected to the same monitor at the same time.  In addition to that, PC monitors suit the needs of gamers who prefer FPS or other competitive games because they are able to react to gamer movements faster due to lower input lag.

So now, how to set up your console with a monitor? To play your Xbox with a monitor, you most likely already have everything you need. However, there a few things you might need to consider. Your setup will very much depend on your monitor having HDMI input as well as built-in speakers.

If your monitor has an HDMI input, you can simply use an HDMI cable to connect Xbox to your display to get video.  If your monitor also features built-in speakers, then the audio will play through built-in speakers over HDMI. In case your monitor does not have built-in speakers, check if it has an audio output.  If your monitor has a 3.5 mm stereo, then you are lucky! You can connect any external audio device.

On the other hand, if your monitor has neither built-in speakers nor audio output, use other strategies to extract sound that are more common to non-HDMI monitors.

Non-HDMI Monitor

For monitors with no HDMI input, choose a different type of connector. Use DVI output and an HDMI-to-DVI adapter, VGA with an HDMI-to-VGA adapter or Display Port with an HDMI-to-Display Port adapter to display video. Now, once you figured the video, you have to take care of outputting audio.

In such a case, the easiest way to connect your console to PC with sound is to easily use a pair of headphones and connect it to your console controller via 3.5 mm stereo jack cable. Alternatively, to extract the audio you can get an HDMI-to VGA/DVO/Display Port adapter with an audio splitter and connect your home theater system or soundbar.

Summary

Summing it up, the biggest advantage is using a single PC monitor to play both Xbox and PC so you can switch between different devices when you feel like switching games or platform. With this combined setup you can optimize your desk space and money. It saves you time since you do not have to unplug cables and rearrange your equipment.
